Millions of Americans turn to chiropractic care every year for help with chronic pain, headaches, sleeplessness, pregnancy issues, and so much more. If you’ve wondered if a chiropractic adjustment could be right for you but don’t even know what to expect from a visit, read on. Here are the steps of a chiropractic adjustment so that you know exactly what will happen and can feel comfortable with the experience.
The first step for your chiropractic adjustment
When you schedule your first appointment with a chiropractor, you’ll start with a consultation. At this appointment you’ll discuss your healthcare challenges and goals. The chiropractor will develop a treatment plan to help you achieve your goals. After your consultation you’ll experience your first chiropractic adjustment.
What to expect
Unlike massage where you disrobe for the service, you’ll stay fully clothed for your chiropractic adjustment. Try to wear loose-fitting clothing that won’t restrict your movement. Your chiropractor should explain every adjustment that they plan to make and how they think it will help you feel better. You will lie face up or face down on a specialized treatment table for the adjustment.
One body part at a time
The chiropractor will put their hands on the part of your body that they will adjust. If it’s a moveable joint, they will move it around to gauge it’s full range of motion. They will add a slight bit of pressure in a specific position, and you may or may not hear a popping sound as they adjust the area. You shouldn’t feel pain. You might feel tension but you will feel immediate relief of that tension following the adjustment.
How you’ll feel after your chiropractic adjustment
Most patients report feeling very good and relaxed when leaving their adjustment appointment. If repeated adjustments are part of your treatment plan, you’ll make follow-up appointments before you leave. You can expect those visits to be shorter than the first one since you won’t have the consultation component of the visit.
